Adoption Stories

We receive wonderful stories of TCHS alumni on a regular basis, and we want to offer our sincere thanks to all who take the time to share them with us. We are invested in each and every pet we care for, and we want the best for them!  This is why we do what we do. Why you give, volunteer, adopt, and encourage your friends and neighbors to do the same.

Share Your TCHS Adoption Story:  email your story with photos to pets@tricountyhumanesociety.org or message us on our Facebook page for future publication. We love to hear how our alumni are doing!

Tesla, now Tess

We always love hearing from our TCHS adopters – but it’s just a little more special, a little more heartening, when it’s about an animal who took more of our time and patience. Every TCHS animal has a piece of our team members’ hearts, but some leave with a bigger piece – like this adoption story.

Tesla was extremely scared when she arrived at the shelter as a stray in early June. She was literally climbing the walls with agitation and fear. Our staff gave her plenty of space, and slowly started to try to make her more comfortable. It took a lot of small, positive interactions to get Tesla to the point where she started to trust us. Many staff members played a part in this effort, but two – Conner and Ashley – were instrumental in getting Tesla to open up. A week in, they reported that Tesla’s switch had flipped – there was a very good dog in there, with the capacity to be a happy girl!

Tesla was adopted in late June. We’re happy to share this update about the newly named Tess:

“She loves it here. She loves my other dogs. She likes cats. She’s very, very happy, and she’s eating really well. She loves my grandchildren, and she is very good with other people. … She’s still a little shy, but she’s come a long way in a couple weeks.”

It can be tricky to be patient, or to have hope for a happy outcome when an animal is as upset as Tess was upon arrival. But it goes to show that small steps, consistency, and a whole lot of patience can bring about big changes. Thank you to Tess’ new family for continuing to help her be such a happy dog!
