The Miniature Schnauzer mix known as Alfredo came to Tri-County Humane Society in September 2023. Now known as Freddy, he found his match a month after his arrival, and, thanks to the patience of his new family, at 7 years of age he’s finally gotten control of his potty problems.
“He was having some urinary issues and was on (still is on) prescription dog food for urinary health. He was very difficult to house-train and had many, many accidents unless we put him out every two hours. Finally, about three to four months ago, he developed a potty routine that seems to work for us.”
Now, Freddy can be left out of his crate for up to five hours at a time without any problems. He still finds other ways to keep his family on their toes, though!
“If there is mischief to be found, he seems to be there, like turning on an outside faucet shut off that was closed for winter and chewing a hole in a plastic birdseed bag.”
His family says that Freddy is a silly boy who loves to play with his stuffies and tease his big sister, Sassy.
“He also loves to snuggle and sleep in our bed at night. While we had our doubts about whether he would ever be a good house dog, he is doing very well now. … He is a delightful addition to our household.”
Of course, some things can’t really be altered. “He is a Schnauzer, so he has to bark at everything!”
Freddy is proof that even older dogs can learn new tricks. Remember him as you set your mind to new goals in 2025!
