The 9-year-old beagle we called Gertrude was adopted May 29, about two weeks after her arrival. She’s now Annika to fit in with the family’s theme of “Star Trek: Voyager” names for pet family members. The “Annika” name choice was fitting because it’s after a character who breaks free from a cybernetic collective to rediscover her individuality. That’s not unlike a beagle finally learning how to be a dog after years spent inside a facility!

“Annika has taken to the free life like nobody’s business. It took her a bit to adjust to things like the stairs and the TV. She lives for Saturday mornings when we have scrambled eggs and cheese.” True to a dog, Annika has mastered the art of begging!

“She’s also learning to rumpus with her bigger but younger sister. Having another dog in the house has helped tremendously. She’s got a goofy personality starting to show! She’s not quite sure how to do zoomies, but it’s sure fun to watch.”

Annika has decided that she can only potty when she’s on a walk, so multiple times a day, rain or shine, toy or no toy, she and one of her new humans walks.

“Someone told me I don’t have to walk in the rain. I politely said, ‘Ma’am, this girl has been locked in a cage for nine years. If homegirl wants to walk, we’re walkin’.’ ”

Annika’s family is proud that they adopted not only a Ridglan beagle but a senior one.

“She picked us. Yes, she’s older but whether we get one year with her or 10, we’re going to make the rest of her life the best of her life and love her more than she knows.” We have no doubt. Live long and prosper, Annika.
