Animals are adopted quickly from Tri-County Humane Society, so we advise you to place an adoption hold if you are interested in a specific animal. 

Adoption holds are $25 plus tax. To place an adoption hold on a pet, call us at (320) 252-0896 and have your Visa, Discover, American Express, or Mastercard ready; holds also can be placed in person at the shelter. NOTE: Tri-County Humane Society CANNOT reserve an animal without an adoption hold. (Holds cannot be placed through email or social media messaging.)

HOW ADOPTION HOLDS WORK:  The $25 plus tax “hold” reserves the TCHS animal of your choice for one day. We do take multiple holds, but it’s always first come, first served. People do change their minds about adoption, and that’s OK - if you’ve fallen in love, you may want to place an additional hold!

THE DETAILS: All holds are nonrefundable and nontransferable. It is a fee for a service (to hold the animal for you); the adoption fee plus tax will still need to be paid in full. If the animal is not adopted by the person with the hold, the pet is available again.

WHAT THE “HOLD” MONEY GOES TO: It helps support our nonprofit animal shelter and the 5,000-plus animals we care for every year!

1. Safe Room - Create a private space for your new cat. It should be in a room you frequent, with all necessary resources for your cat, and no access (even visual) to the rest of the house.
2. Swap Scents - Swap cat beds between the two cats' territories so each cat can get used to the other's smell.
3. Swap Sites - Move the new cat into a bathroom. Move the resident cat to the new cat's safe room, then let the new cat out of the bathroom to explore the rest of the house.
4. Closed-Door Feedings - Feed the cats on opposite sides of a closed door. Start at a comfortable distance from the door and move the bowls closer with each feeding.
5. Gate Feedings - Slowly allow the cats to see each other during their meals. Use a covered baby gate with a towel over it, for example. 
6. Playtime - Begin playing with the resident cat. Bring in the new cat and immediately begin playing with it. Keep sessions short at first and end the sessions on a positive note. 

Customers 55 years of age or older qualify for a 25 percent discount on all adoptions of animals 1 year or older. Customers should present a valid ID for this discount to apply. The senior adopter is not to use this discount to adopt for other customers.

TCHS will offer a 25 percent discount on all adoptions of animals 1 year or older for active military members/veterans. Customers should present their valid military ID/proof of service for this discount to apply. The military member/veteran is not to use this discount to adopt for other customers.
