Senior Care Facility Pet Visits

Senior Visits from TCHS

The human-animal bond doesn’t fade with time. Knowing how crucial these ties are, Tri-County Humane Society proudly hosts visits to Central Minnesota senior care facilities. To facilitate these visits, the humane society uses volunteers and their TCHS-approved animals. TCHS volunteers also bring along our educational animals, Bun Bun, a rabbit, and Popcorn and Butter, guinea pigs, to visit with seniors.

Visits can be done during the week or on weekends, depending on what is the volunteer and organization’s preference. Visits typically are done monthly and last for about 30 minutes to an hour.

To Participate:

Active volunteers with TCHS bring the animals to the senior care centers. If you are not a current volunteer but are interested in doing the visits, please fill out a volunteer application.  The animals that do visits must undergo a screening by the volunteer and humane education coordinator and be current on all their vaccinations. They also must have an excellent temperament and be very social.

A senior care facility that wants a visit from a TCHS-approved animal should contact Kate at 252-0896, ext. 27, for arrangements.

The Benefits of Animals

TCHS staff have heard amazing stories from these senior visits, including about residents who had been standoffish coming out of their shells when they meet the animals. Some largely nonverbal residents have even started talking! TCHS is proud to be a part of these experiences. Find out how you can be a part of them today!
