Pet Intake

Each year, around 4,000 pets find comfort at TCHS. The majority of pets we receive are cats, followed by dogs. However, we also receive many small animals such as rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, mice, gerbils, chinchillas, ferrets, birds, reptiles, etc… We offer a safe, welcoming place for people to bring the animals they can no longer care for.

We strive to adopt out all animals that enter our shelter.  This can be challenging, as we are an open-admission shelter and we accept animals regardless of their age, health, species, breed or behavior, with the exception of pets who have recently bitten and require veterinary quarantine.

All pets receive a basic temperament evaluation and a basic physical examination.  We will not knowingly adopt out aggressive animals.

Many people think animals at humane societies are all strays or animals with behavior issues.  However, only about 9% of the animals we receive are strays, and the majority of owned pets surrendered to us are arriving due to no fault of their own.  A few common reasons include "moving," "can't afford to keep," "not enough time," or "allergies in the family."

The Ultimate Guide to Financial Aid for Pets

Pet Intake Process

Call (320) 252-0896 to schedule an appointment.  Same day appointments are typically not available, so be prepared to schedule your appointment for a later date.  We will not euthanize a pet to make room for yours - and your pet, once here, will receive the same consideration.

Bring with you at the time of intake: veterinary and/or vaccination records and any toys or supplies you would like to go home with the animal.

Allow at least 30 minutes for your appointment. You will be asked many questions about your pet. We want to be sure we gather as much information from you as we can so that we may find the best possible match for them.  Please be honest and open with us. We want their transition to a new home to go as smoothly as possible.

Stray Animals
Intake fees for stray animals found in areas that contract with us are paid by those particular townships or cities.  Not all strays go to the same place, however, and there are a few townships that do not do anything with their strays.  Because we must hold strays for a minimum of five days to advertise and look for a possible owner, we must charge a fee of $50 for any stray found in an area that does not contract with us.
